Concept note: convince in two pages before the full application
Many funders ask for a concept note first — two to five pages to decide whether they want the full file. It's a filter, not an exhaustive summary.
What a concept note must contain
It answers a single question: 'should we go further with this project?'. So it gets to the point.
- Context and problem, in a few lines, quantified if possible.
- Objective and proposed solution.
- Beneficiaries and area of intervention.
- Expected results and impact indicators.
- Overall budget (a range is fine) and duration.
- The organization and its capacity to deliver.
Concept note vs full application
The note filters; the file proves. Don't put the detailed M&E plan or annexes in it — save them for the next step. A note that's too long is as disqualifying as an empty one.
Follow the funder's template to the word (page count, required sections) — it's the first test of rigour.
